I got another go to unplug the controller, and finally was able to remove the controller. I changed the view to 1000 km and no reboot or crash since then. Since the maps update was crashing the system I realized that the closeup view of the maps put extra processing load on the system causing it to crash. After removing the top the knob spins freely without being stuck, inside the knob there is a plastic ring that is broken (see photos).My assumption here is that, with the top being put back, the broken section of the ring is causing the stickiness.
